Our Top Tips for Getting Presentation Packaging Right for Your Product

As a consumer, in most cases, whatever we are looking to buy, we have a number of different products to choose from. When different brands are selling a very similar product, it is most often carefully thought out presentation packaging that wins the sale. On a full retail shelf, custom packaging can do a lot to help consumers recognise your brand, attract their attention and build up anticipation for opening up the packaging and getting to the product inside.

Here we have put together some of our top tips for getting the most value out of product packaging:

Take aim – your brand should know your audience, so when it comes to the packaging for your product, it needs to be aimed directly at the right target. Presentation packaging designs need to resonate with your target audience. Some regular customers may lose loyalty to your brand if they don’t like the way you choose to package your products, so designs should always be aimed at your target audience.

Think green – consumers are increasingly concerned with doing what they can to protect the environment and as a result, they are much more likely to seek out products that reflect an eco-conscious lifestyle. A great way to show that you are a green-thinking brand is by switching to eco-friendly materials for your presentation packaging. Choose materials that are completely biodegradable, recyclable and/or made from recycled materials. If you are using cardboard/paper packaging, it is worth ensuring that your materials are taken from a sustainable source.

Be creative – try to be unique with your designs so that your packaging and product stand out from other similar products. However, don’t forget that packaging should still make it clear what your product is. This leads us on to the next point…

Be practical – as important as it is to be creative, as well as clearly showing what your product is, packaging also has to work on a shelf. If it can’t stand up properly, or can’t be stacked, it’s unlikely to have its full impact on the consumer.

Tailor packaging to your budget – you need to choose designs and materials that are practical in terms of cost, but also to the budget of your target audience. Don’t undervalue an expensive, luxury product with cheap presentation packaging, as this is likely to turn away your target audience. Likewise, don’t price the consumer out of the market by presenting a less valuable product in expensive packaging.

Think distribution – when designing your packaging, think carefully not only about the costs involved, but also the logistics and timeframes needed to get your products onto the shop shelves. Can your ideas be made reality within the timeline, or will logistical issues get in the way as a result of your designs?
